Susan was quite moved by the surprising readiness with which her son had agreed to all these drastic changes in their future relationship, also his calm acceptance of his position now as a servant in his own mother's household, as evidenced by the immediate and apparently unconscious use of the manner of address, and terms, in keeping with that position. Also, not a little touched by his first, rather clumsy attempt at a curtsy, a gesture she none the less appreciated, also decided to teach him how to make this properly for use on suitable occasions, as for example when he had a request to make of his mistress, or when entering and leaving the room before guests.

Regarding this new, clearly established relationship, Susan felt that this was indeed the best solution for all concerned. She did not at all experience the slightest feeling of guilt, in having now totally relagated her only son, to the quite ignoble position of her own maid servant, or in also demanding of him, only complete subservience in return.
